# The Met publishes a public Heilbrunn essay on Amarna art and Aten religion

Date: 2000

## The fact

The Metropolitan Museum’s Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History published a lasting public essay on Amarna, including the distinctive portraits associated with [Nefertiti](/people/nefertiti) and Akhenaten. The essay is a completed educational instrument. It is not an excavation.

## Context

Mass reproduction of the Berlin bust had already made a face famous. A museum essay that situates that face in Aten religion and workshop practice is a different, sourced access path.

Nefertiti is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

The Met essay is the official page. Britannica independently summarises Amarna and Nefertiti.

Official or archival record: Met Heilbrunn — Amarna (https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/amar/hd_amar.htm; Metropolitan Museum of Art).

## Significance

Improving cultural-access path. Medium confidence on cohesion size.

An essay can correct tourist myth. It cannot return a bust.

## What is established and what is not

Established: the Met published a public Amarna essay. Not established: a literacy or attendance series caused by that page.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
