# The Berlin bust becomes a standard school-book image of an ancient queen

Date: 1960

## The fact

By the 1960s the Berlin bust was a default illustration in general histories and school art books for an ancient queen. Identification captions often omitted the uninscribed status of the object.

## Context

A famous face in a textbook is both a visibility gain for a woman of the 18th Dynasty and a flattening of Amarna politics. Both can be true. The restitution fight used the same image.

[Nefertiti](/people/nefertiti) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Britannica and the Met essay independently treat the bust as the canonical modern image. They are not a 1960s textbook scan, but they document the icon’s status.

Official or archival record: Britannica — Nefertiti (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Nefertiti; Encyclopaedia Britannica).

## Significance

Education-access and representation path. Medium confidence on dates of ‘standardisation’.

An icon can teach and mislead. Caption quality is later editorial work.

## What is established and what is not

Established: the bust became a canonical educational image in the twentieth century. Not established: a unique literacy coefficient.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
