# Nicholas Reeves publishes a theory of hidden chambers behind Tutankhamun’s burial for Nefertiti

Date: 2015

## The fact

In August 2015 Nicholas Reeves published a theory that [Tutankhamun](/people/tutankhamun)’s tomb conceals an earlier burial of Nefertiti. Radar campaigns followed. Results have not produced an accepted opened chamber of hers.

## Context

Tourism and scholarship both amplify the Berlin face. An unconfirmed chamber is not a tomb. National Geographic reported the claim and the need for tests. Subsequent scans did not close the question as a discovery.

Nefertiti is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

[Reeves](/people/rachel-reeves)’s paper trail via Oxford-linked communications and National Geographic’s independent report. Different roles.

Official or archival record: University of Oxford research communications on Reeves’s Amarna work (https://www.ox.ac.uk/; University of Oxford).

## Significance

Low-confidence hype/conservation-priority path. Do not store as a burial Fact.

A hypothesis is allowed. Upgrading it to a tomb is not.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Reeves published the 2015 theory and it was widely reported. Not established: a hidden Nefertiti burial.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
