# UNESCO lists Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis as World Heritage

Date: 1979

## The fact

In 1979 UNESCO inscribed Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis on the World Heritage List. Karnak’s early Aten complexes, where [Nefertiti](/people/nefertiti) appears in ritual scenes, sit inside that landscape. The listing is a completed international-conservation act, not an Amarna city listing.

## Context

Akhetaten itself is in Middle Egypt and is not this inscription. Thebes is where the couple’s early Aten programme was carved before the move. Listing creates duties and tourist frames. It does not restore chiselled-out Amun names.

Nefertiti is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

UNESCO’s list page is official. Egypt’s monuments portal independently frames national heritage administration.

## Significance

Conservation-access path. Medium confidence. Complex contribution.

Heritage listing can fund conservation and also freeze a tourist script. Split later tourism Facts.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Thebes was listed in 1979. Not established: that Nefertiti’s welfare is measured by visitor numbers.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
