# Electoral reform further restricted political competition

Date: 2021

The [National Assembly](/organizations/national-assembly) approved Law No. 1070 reforming Electoral Law No. 331. The IACHR concluded that the reform did not establish the conditions required for free, fair, competitive and properly observed elections and instead included rules restricting electoral competition and political rights. Human Rights Watch likewise identified the reform as consolidating government control over the electoral process.
