# EPA finalizes first carbon limits on existing coal and new gas power plants (2024)

Date: 2024

On 25 April 2024, the [US Environmental Protection Agency](/organizations/env-org-us-epa), under Administrator [Michael Regan](/people/env-michael-regan), finalized carbon-pollution standards requiring long-running existing coal plants and new baseload gas plants to cut greenhouse-gas emissions sharply, largely through carbon capture and storage. It was the first time the federal government set carbon-dioxide limits on existing coal-fired power plants.
