# European Commission recommends a 90% net-emissions reduction target for 2040

On 6 February 2024 the European Commission recommended reducing the EU's net greenhouse-gas emissions by 90% by 2040 compared with 1990 and opened the political debate on the target. The recommendation was an intermediate step toward a later legislative proposal and negotiation, not itself an enacted binding target.
