# EU adopts the Nature Restoration Law (2024)

Date: 2024

On 17 June 2024, the EU Council gave final approval to the Nature Restoration Law, the bloc's first continent-wide, legally binding framework requiring member states to put recovery measures in place on at least 20% of the EU's land and sea areas by 2030, including restoring degraded forests, wetlands and other ecosystems. The law passed after a contentious legislative process and is intended to reverse [biodiversity loss](/drivers/biodiversity-loss) and bolster natural carbon sinks.
