# European Parliament and Council adopt the European Climate Law

Date: 2021

On 30 June 2021 the European Parliament and the Council adopted Regulation (EU) 2021/1119, the European Climate Law. The regulation writes into Union law the objective of climate neutrality by 2050 and an intermediate net greenhouse-gas reduction of at least 55 percent by 2030 compared with 1990. The Commission under President von der [Leyen](/people/energy-ursula-von-der-leyen) had proposed the regulation in 2020 as the legal core of the European Green Deal. Adoption is a co-legislative act, not a presidential decree.
