# Council activates the Temporary Protection Directive for people fleeing Ukraine

Date: 2022

On 4 March 2022 the Council, on a Commission proposal, activated Directive 2001/55/EC for the first time, giving people fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine an immediate residence and work right in the Union. The President presented the step as a Commission-led solidarity measure. Member states implement status on the ground.
