# Michael Flynn resigns as national security adviser

On 13 February 2017 [Michael Flynn](/people/michael-flynn) stepped down as [President Trump](/people/mig-donald-trump)'s national security adviser after only 24 days. The Washington Post had reported that, before taking office and while [Barack Obama](/people/barack-obama) was still president, Flynn discussed U.S. sanctions on Russia with ambassador Sergey Kislyak, and that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about those talks.
