# Students and unions stage national day of school protests

Date: 2026

On 6 October 2026, French high-school students, teachers and parents joined the largest national day of action in a protest movement that had spread from Paris suburbs across the country. Reuters reported marches in major cities and said the High School Students Union estimated that around 1,800 schools were blockaded or closed. The same report put cumulative arrests at more than 6,100, mostly minors, with hundreds of injuries since the movement began.

Protest demands focused on teacher shortages, unreplaced absences, long school days, deteriorating buildings and the government's policing response. Prime Minister [Sébastien Lecornu](/people/sebastien-lecornu) said ministers would return by the end of October with proposals on teacher replacements, schedules and repairs. The day of action was organized as political pressure on the government rather than as a single violent event. Its scale and demands made the mobilisation a national political crisis.
