# Late ashram brahmacharya tests with young women, including Manu Gandhi, enter the documentary record

## The fact

In 1946–47, during Noakhali and after, Gandhi’s ashram practice of sleeping with young women, including his grandniece Manu, as a test of brahmacharya was recorded in diaries, letters, and later scholarly editions. It is a controversy about intimate exposure and power in a spiritual household, not a criminal verdict invented here and not a reason to erase salt or fasts.

## Context

Celibacy experiments on dependent women, then kept in a public documentary file, are an intimate-exposure harm even when described by him as self-purification. Do not invent rape findings the courts did not try. Do not write that the women were publicly free co-authors of a scientific protocol. Manu’s diary is a source, not a press release.
