# Police station is burned at Chauri Chaura during Non-Cooperation; Gandhi suspends the campaign

## The fact

On 4 February 1922 a crowd at Chauri Chaura, Gorakhpur district, attacked and burned a police station, killing the officers inside, during the Non-Cooperation movement Gandhi had led since 1920. He condemned the violence and, with Congress, suspended mass civil disobedience. It is not a claim that he ordered the fire.

## Context

Non-Cooperation had already been mixed: boycott, pickets, and local fury. Gandhi’s answer was to stop rather than to escalate. Stopping saved some future victims and left peasants who had mobilised without a campaign. Both are real.

Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Worsening path: lethal crowd violence inside a named non-violent campaign, then a sudden halt. High confidence on occurrence.

Do not invent his presence in the crowd. Do not write that non-violence was empirically total because he wished it.

Established: the station was burned on 4 February 1922 and Gandhi moved to suspend Non-Cooperation. Not established: a Factrail original headcount, or that suspension was costless.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.
