# Gandhi calls an all-India hartal against the Rowlatt Acts

## The fact

On 6 April 1919 Gandhi’s hartal against the Rowlatt (Anarchical and Revolutionary Crimes) Acts was observed in several cities as a mass political strike. Jallianwala Bagh on 13 April is a related British massacre, not this same Fact.

## Context

A hartal can be non-violent and still be followed by riots. Gandhi later fasted in penitence. The improving path here is the public refusal of a wartime detention law.
