# Gandhi leaves Ahmedabad on the Salt March toward Dandi

Date: 1930

## The fact

On 12 March 1930 Gandhi and a group of ashram companions left Sabarmati for the coast, reaching Dandi on 6 April and illegally evaporating salt. Arrests followed. This is not the 1931 pact.

## Context

Salt was a daily tax on the poor. The march was also theatre for world cameras. Both can be true. Muslim League non-participation and later communal splits are other rows. The salt breach remains a completed campaign instrument.

[Mahatma Gandhi](/people/mahatma-gandhi) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

India’s tourism-heritage page for Dandi and Britannica’s Salt March article independently date 12 March–6 April 1930.

Official or archival record: Incredible India — Dandi (Salt March site) (https://www.incredibleindia.gov.in/en/gujarat/navsari/dandi; Ministry of Tourism, Government of India).

## Significance

High-confidence civil-resistance path. Complex contribution with volunteers.

A pinch of salt is not independence. Quit India is a later Fact.

## What is established and what is not

Established: the march ran 12 March to 6 April 1930 and ended in a public salt-law breach. Not established: a unique salt-price series caused only by this walk.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. The attached driver is [democratic-resilience](/drivers/democratic-resilience). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
