# Harijan-era Gandhi defends varna as a division of labour while attacking untouchability

## The fact

In 1933 and neighbouring Harijan essays Gandhi attacked untouchability and still defended a purified varna as hereditary calling rather than as Ambedkar’s annihilation of caste.

## Context

Temple-entry and scavenger dignity campaigns can coexist with a theory that keeps inherited occupation. Ambedkar’s 1945 book is the independent indictment of that mix. Do not neutralize the theory by quoting only the anti-untouchability sentences.
