# Gabbard joins the Republican Party after endorsing Donald Trump

Date: 2024

On 22 October 2024, after endorsing [Donald Trump](/people/mig-donald-trump) earlier in the presidential campaign, [Gabbard](/people/tulsi-gabbard) announced that she had joined the [Republican Party](/organizations/republican-party). The shift formalized a political realignment that had developed after her departure from the Democratic Party in 2022. The fact is the endorsement and party change, not an assumption that all of Gabbard's prior policy positions changed at the same time. The transition also provides direct context for Trump's subsequent decision to nominate her for Director of National Intelligence.
