# Cotta publishes Zur Farbenlehre, Goethe’s anti-Newtonian colour theory

Date: 1810

## The fact

In 1810 Cotta issued [Goethe](/people/johann-wolfgang-von-goethe)’s Zur Farbenlehre, a long attack on Newton’s Opticks plus plates of colour phenomena. It is not a prism experiment performed in 1810 by Newton, who was long dead.

## Context

Goethe observed simultaneous contrast and after-images with care. Those observations can be saved. The claim that white light is not composite cannot. SEP’s Goethe-science entry states both. A prestige error in a school culture is still an error.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

The Stanford Encyclopedia’s Goethe science article and the Cotta archive at Marbach independently frame the 1810 book. Different roles.

Official or archival record: Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy — Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von (https://iep.utm.edu/goethe/; Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy).

## Significance

Knowledge-harm path. High confidence that the book exists and that physics did not follow it.

A wrong theory printed by a great poet is still a wrong theory. Do not rebate it with Faust.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Farbenlehre was published in 1810 as an anti-Newtonian system. Not established: that every later art-school colour chart is this book.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. The attached driver is edu-[digital-learning-access](/drivers/edu-digital-learning-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
