After 18 January 1871, German imperial school and festival culture repeatedly used Faust as a national allegory. [Goethe](/people/johann-wolfgang-von-goethe) did not attend the Versailles proclamation.

## Context

A tragedy about a wager is not a founding statute of an empire. Using it as one is a polarising official-culture act.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name.
