# Robert Golob takes over party that becomes Freedom Movement

Date: 2022

On 26 January 2022 energy executive [Robert Golob](/people/robert-golob) took over the small Green Actions Party, which renamed itself the [Freedom Movement](/organizations/freedom-movement). Three months later the party won the Slovenian parliamentary election with about 34 percent of the vote, defeating [Janez Janša](/people/janez-jansa)'s [Slovenian Democratic Party](/organizations/slovenian-democratic-party).

### A rapid new-party victory and its democratic stakes

The defeat of Janez Janša in April 2022 followed an unusually fast reorganization of Slovenia's party system. On 26 January 2022 former electricity company executive Robert Golob took control of the small Green Actions party, transforming it into the Freedom Movement. An early 2022 campaign centered on managerial competence, allegations of politicized governance and opposition to Janša's confrontational style. Freedom became a vehicle for voters seeking a change of prime minister rather than merely a new environmental party.

On 24 April 2022 the Freedom Movement won 410,769 votes, 34.45 percent of valid party-list ballots, and 41 seats in the 90-member [National Assembly](/organizations/national-assembly). The incumbent Slovenian Democratic Party received 279,897 votes, 23.48 percent, and 27 seats. The five main party lists filled 88 general seats, while representatives of the Italian and Hungarian national communities held two separately elected seats. Turnout reached about 71 percent, according to Slovenia's election commission. The result showed substantial electoral switching: the new party won more seats than any single list had obtained in Slovenia's preceding parliamentary elections.

Studies of the 2022 vote have identified tactical anti-incumbent voting as a significant explanation of Freedom's breakthrough. Voters did not simply adopt a newly drafted party programme; many calculated which organization had the strongest chance of displacing the sitting government. This changed [political competition](/drivers/political-competition) by pulling support away from several established center-left parties. It also reflected [political polarization](/drivers/political-polarization) after a period of disputes over media, institutions and pandemic governance. A fresh party could produce a parliamentary majority through coalition partners, but governing durability would depend on whether Golob could retain the voters assembled around the single objective of replacing Janša.
