# IRS reports surpassing $1 billion collected in back taxes from high-wealth taxpayers

Date: 2024

On 11 July 2024 the IRS and [US Treasury](/organizations/us-treasury) announced the agency had surpassed $1 billion in past-due taxes collected from high-wealth individuals, part of compliance work funded by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. The effort focused on about 1,600 individuals earning more than $1 million a year who each owed more than $250,000 in recognised tax debt. Commissioner Danny Werfel said the agency had reached 'an important milestone in our effort to improve compliance and ensure fairness in the tax system,' noting collections from such taxpayers had previously been 'negligible' due to budget constraints.
