# Disquisitiones Arithmeticae is dedicated to the Duke of Brunswick

Date: 1801

## The fact

The 1801 Disquisitiones opens with a dedication to Charles William Ferdinand, the paying duke, a public ritual that placed the new number-theory school under a princely name. [Gauss](/people/carl-friedrich-gauss) wrote the flattery; the court had paid the years that wrote the book. The row stores the title-page politics. It does not twin every theorem.

## Context

Early-modern and Enlightenment science often repaid stipends on the title page. Capture here means a public knowledge object wearing a duke’s arms, not that the congruences are false. Do not merge with the 1791 stipend (the cash) or the 1802 Petersburg refusal (the lock-in). Do not treat later academy reprints that drop living princes as 1801. A dedication is [institutional corruption](/drivers/institutional-corruption) only as patronage capture of a public good, at modest weight, not as an embezzlement indictment. The improving education path of the same octavo remains on its own row; mixed signs are not averaged. Capture here is a title-page ritual, not a claim that quadratic forms are false and not a modern procurement file.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

The 1801 copy at Internet Archive includes the ducal dedication apparatus. MacTutor independently reprints Gauss’s address to the duke from the Disquisitiones front matter. Official/archival: https://archive.org/details/disquisitionesa00gaus. Independent: https://mathshistory.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Gauss/. The records establish the dedication. They do not establish a criminal conviction. A public school of congruences wearing a prince’s name is capture of a knowledge object, not a claim that the proofs were bought as falsehoods. A 1801 issue without the duke’s name would change the row.

## Significance

Worsening capture path: a public treatise as princely ornament. High confidence on the dedication. Modest weight. Theorems remain theorems on the education row. Later reprints are other instruments. Do not upgrade 1801 into a modern procurement scandal.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Dedication is not the treatise’s theorems stored as an education row. Mixed effects of Disquisitiones Arithmeticae is dedicated to the Duke of Brunswick are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: the 1801 Disquisitiones is dedicated to the Brunswick duke. Not established: a bribery judgment, or that the mathematical sections are this political instrument. A showing of a first edition without dedication would change the row.

Shared responsibility is part of Disquisitiones Arithmeticae is dedicated to the Duke of Brunswick. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1801-08-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

The attached driver is institutional-corruption. The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
