# Gauss matriculates at the University of Göttingen

Date: 1795

## The fact

In October 1795 [Gauss](/people/carl-friedrich-gauss) matriculated at the Georgia Augusta in Göttingen, leaving the Carolinum for a university library, lectures, and the old observatory’s instruments. He read Euler, Lagrange, and Newton, kept the later-famous diary, and began the inquiries that became Disquisitiones. Fellow students and professors shared the rooms; they did not become the author of 1801. The row stores one matriculation. It does not twin every diary entry into extra Facts.

## Context

Göttingen was a Hanoverian university with a strong library, not a Paris École. A Brunswick stipend boy could read what Brunswick did not hold. That is education access, not a claim that 1795 invented number theory. Do not merge with 1807, when he returned as a salaried director under a different political weather (Westphalia then Hanover). Do not treat later tourist labels on the Gauss tower as this matriculation. Pfaff, who later examined the dissertation at Helmstedt, is a neighbouring teacher, not this 1795 roll.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Student Göttingen is not the 1807 directorship. Mixed effects of Gauss matriculates at the University of Göttingen are separate paths.

## Evidence and sources

The university’s Historic Observatory pages locate Gauss in Göttingen’s scientific buildings across his life, including the student years’ institutional setting. MacTutor independently dates the 1795–1798 study period. Official: https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/96209.html. Independent: https://mathshistory.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Gauss/. The records establish matriculation years. They do not establish a unique later enrolment series for Hanover, or that 1807 is this student act. A contradictory matriculation date would change the row.

## Significance

Improving education path: university library and instruments after college. High confidence on 1795. Modest weight. Later directorship, magnetic hut, and survey are other dates. Modern electronics named after him are not this roll. Shared reading with a European print corpus is the mechanism, not a personality halo.

The attached driver is edu-[digital-learning-access](/drivers/edu-digital-learning-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Gauss was a Göttingen student from 1795. Not established: that every diary line of 1796 is a public instrument, or that the 1807 office is this matriculation. A showing that he never enrolled in 1795 would change the row. A later statue would not.

Shared responsibility is part of Gauss matriculates at the University of Göttingen. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1795-10-15 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
