# Gauss keeps advanced teaching in Latin elite forms with few students

Date: 1808

## The fact

From his early Göttingen chair years, conventionally dated from 1808 onward as teaching settled, [Gauss](/people/carl-friedrich-gauss) offered difficult lectures to very small numbers and did not turn his results into popular German schoolbooks, keeping the living voice of the subject inside an elite Latin-and-seminar gate. It is not the 1801 printed Disquisitiones, which anyone with Latin and money could buy, and it is not the 1799 proof as a shop object. Students who survived the room (later including, at a distance of years, men like Dedekind in memory of the school) were few. The row stores inequality of hearing. It does not twin every empty lecture hall as a new Fact.

## Context

A professor can print a book and still teach as a closed shop. Gauss did both: public Latin masterpieces and a reputation for inaudible, unprepared, or sparsely attended lectures. Do not treat later German-language popular science as his. Do not treat the improving books as cancelled by this gate; they are other rows. Medium confidence on any one semester’s headcount; high confidence on the elite, low-volume reputation in the biographical record. Sophie Germain’s postal access is a small offset on another date; it is not a Göttingen classroom opened to women. A living voice kept inside a tiny Latin seminar is inequality of hearing even when shop copies of Disquisitiones existed.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

The university’s Gauss pages locate him as professor from 1807/08 with teaching duties attached to the chair. MacTutor independently reports the poor-teacher reputation and the small advanced audience. Official: https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/96209.html. Independent: https://mathshistory.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Gauss/. The records establish elite low-volume teaching. They do not establish a unique later enrolment Gini. Packed popular German lectures in these years are exactly what the biographical record does not show. A run of packed popular German lectures in 1808–20 would change the row.

## Significance

Worsening inequality path: hearing the master was a tiny-club good. Medium-to-high confidence. Modest weight because the books existed. Printed treatises remain improving education rows. Do not invent a unique modern tuition-fee coefficient.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Latin elite teaching is not the 1799 dissertation as a public proof, nor the 1801 book. Mixed effects of Gauss keeps advanced teaching in Latin elite forms with few students are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Gauss’s Göttingen teaching was elite, low-volume, and not popular-German. Not established: exact yearly headcounts in the two locators, or that 1801 print is this gate. A documented popular lecture series would change the row.

Shared responsibility is part of Gauss keeps advanced teaching in Latin elite forms with few students. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1808-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

The attached driver is [income-inequality](/drivers/income-inequality). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
