# Gauss publishes Theoria combinationis observationum as a least-squares treatise

Date: 1823

## The fact

In 1823 [Gauss](/people/carl-friedrich-gauss) published Theoria combinationis observationum erroribus minimis obnoxiae, a systematic treatment of combining observations by least squares, years after he had used the method on Ceres and after Legendre’s 1805 memoir. He wrote the theory; computers could copy the normal equations. The row stores one memoir. Priority harshness toward Legendre is a separate polarization path.

## Context

Error combination is a public-data problem: many measurements, one number, a rule that others can audit. 1823 is the full Gauss treatise on that rule. Do not treat later SI or electronics as 1823. Do not treat a modern statistics package’s ‘normpdf’ as his act. Geodesy supplied the shop examples; the fiscal map of Hanover is still another row. A later classroom ‘normal curve’ is not this 1823 Latin title, and Legendre’s 1805 print remains another author’s instrument.

Shared responsibility is part of Gauss publishes Theoria combinationis observationum as a least-squares treatise. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1823-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

## Evidence and sources

The Göttingen academy issued Gauss’s later mathematical-astronomical memoirs, including the combination-of-observations work. MacTutor independently dates the least-squares writings and the relation to earlier astronomical practice. Official: https://www.adw-goe.de/. Independent: https://mathshistory.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Gauss/. The records establish a 1823 treatise. They do not establish a unique later error-coefficient for European science. A contradictory first-issue year would change the row.

Official or archival record: Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities (https://www.adw-goe.de/; Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen).

## Significance

Improving data path: a copyable error rule. High confidence on 1823. Modest weight. Later ‘Gaussian distribution’ pedagogy is not this Latin title. The 1809 book remains a different instrument. Priority letters remain a different sign.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Gauss published a least-squares treatise in 1823 as Theoria combinationis observationum. Not established: that he thereby authored every later normal curve, or that Legendre’s 1805 paper is this book. A showing of a different 1823 title without least squares would change the row.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. 1823 memoir is not a later normal-distribution textbook and not Legendre’s 1805 paper. Mixed effects of Gauss publishes Theoria combinationis observationum as a least-squares treatise are separate paths.
