# Gauss asserts prior possession of least squares against Legendre’s 1805 memoir

Date: 1809

## The fact

In 1809, in the orbit of Theoria motus, [Gauss](/people/carl-friedrich-gauss) publicly asserted that he had possessed and used least squares long before Adrien-Marie Legendre’s 1805 Nouvelles méthodes, a credit fight that split readers into Gauss people and Legendre people. He had diary and Ceres practice; Legendre had the first print. The row stores the polarizing assertion. It does not settle the philosophy of priority.

## Context

Scientific publics polarise around credit. Gauss’s habit of claiming silent priority (here, and later in geometry) taught contemporaries to hear him as a hoarder as well as a genius. Do not merge with 1823 method. A claim can be factually partly true and still be a polarizing instrument in 1809 print. French and German readers did not need a diet to pick a camp. A claim can be partly true as private practice and still be a 1809 polarizing instrument once printed against a 1805 memoir.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

Göttingen’s digitised Theoria motus and related papers carry the 1809 astronomical-method public. MacTutor independently discusses Gauss’s least-squares priority claims relative to Legendre. Official: https://gdz.sub.uni-goettingen.de/. Independent: https://mathshistory.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Gauss/. The records establish the 1809 claim-against-Legendre cluster. They do not establish a unique later citation-war index. A 1809 Gauss preface fully conceding 1805 first print without prior-possession language would soften the row.

## Significance

Worsening polarization path: credit war in a tiny elite public. High confidence on the claim’s existence. Modest weight. 1823 remains an improving method row. Diary holdback remains a general data-access row. Do not treat a modern statistics flame-war as 1809.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Priority fight is not the 1823 treatise as a method, nor a later distribution name. Mixed effects of Gauss asserts prior possession of least squares against Legendre’s 1805 memoir are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: in 1809 Gauss publicly claimed prior possession of least squares against Legendre’s 1805 print. Not established: a unique later polarization index, or that 1823 is this fight. A full 1809 concession without the claim would change the row.

Shared responsibility is part of Gauss asserts prior possession of least squares against Legendre’s 1805 memoir. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1809-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

The attached driver is [political-polarization](/drivers/political-polarization). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
