# Gauss publishes Intensitas vis magneticae terrestris ad mensuram absolutam revocata

Date: 1832

## The fact

In 1832 [Gauss](/people/carl-friedrich-gauss)’s Intensitas vis magneticae terrestris ad mensuram absolutam revocata showed how to reduce Earth’s magnetic intensity to absolute mechanical units, a paper tied to the new magnetic work with Wilhelm Weber. It is not a later ‘gauss’ unit voted by a twentieth-century commission, and it is not the 1833 telegraph. Weber built and shared apparatus; Gauss wrote the reduction. The row stores one measurement paper. It does not twin every later Resultate volume.

## Context

Geomagnetism in the 1830s was Humboldt’s international hobby and a Göttingen shop. Absolute units meant a number in Göttingen could be compared with a number in a colonial station without a private needle-cult. That is a data path. It is not energy policy, not a power plant, and not SI naming after his death. Do not treat later electronics as 1832. Do not treat the 1833 wire between observatory and Weber’s cabinet as this paper. Humboldt’s organising of a wider net is neighbouring labour, stored also as elite-network colour elsewhere. A later ‘gauss’ on an SI list is a committee’s instrument, not this 1832 reduction.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

The Göttingen academy is the public issuing home of the intensity memoir. Wittmann’s HGSS overview independently dates the magnetic decade with Weber and the absolute-intensity programme. Official: https://www.adw-goe.de/. Independent: https://hgss.copernicus.org/articles/11/199/2020/. The records establish 1832 absolute intensity work. They do not establish a unique later magnetometer-industry series, or an SI vote. A number that can be compared between Göttingen and a distant station is the data claim; it is not a power plant and not a twentieth-century unit committee. A contradictory publication year would change the row.

## Significance

Improving data path: comparable geomagnetic numbers. High confidence on 1832. Modest weight. Later unit names, electronics, and Gaussian distributions are not this memoir. The telegraph is a different 1833 instrument. Shared apparatus with Weber is ordinary and is not erased.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. 1832 intensity paper is not an SI unit committee and not a later electric motor. Mixed effects of Gauss publishes Intensitas vis magneticae terrestris ad mensuram absolutam revocata are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Gauss published the 1832 absolute magnetic-intensity memoir. Not established: that he chaired a later metrology bureau, or that the 1833 telegraph is this paper. A showing of a different first year would change the row.

Shared responsibility is part of Gauss publishes Intensitas vis magneticae terrestris ad mensuram absolutam revocata. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1832-12-15 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
