# Gauss becomes professor and director of the Göttingen Observatory

Date: 1807

## The fact

In July 1807 [Gauss](/people/carl-friedrich-gauss) was called to Göttingen as ordinary professor of astronomy and director of the university observatory then being finished to Borheck’s plans; he lived and worked there until 1855. The building’s 1803–1816 construction is shared civic labour; he did not lay the bricks. It is not the 1795 student matriculation and not a later Lichtenberg-Kolleg reuse of the house. The row stores one office.

## Context

A university observatory is an education-and-measurement shop: students, instruments, a meridian, a salary. Gauss’s most important stated duty was to run it, not to sit in a diet. Political weather was ugly: Prussia’s defeat, a Westphalian kingdom under Jérôme, then a return of Hanover. The office outlasted those flags. That durability is context, not a claim that 1807 was liberal government. Do not treat the 2008 reconstruction as 1807. Do not treat later Gaussian optics or probability as this chair. Olbers’s recommendation and the academy’s earlier 1802 membership are neighbouring honours, not this July appointment.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## Evidence and sources

The university’s Historic Observatory page dates the 1807 call, the Borheck building, and Gauss’s residence until 23 February 1855. Britannica independently states the Göttingen professorship and observatory directorship from 1807. Official: https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/96209.html. Independent: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Carl-Friedrich-Gauss. The records establish office and year. They do not establish a unique later German research-budget series. A contradictory appointment letter with another year would change the row.

Official or archival record: University of Göttingen — Historic Observatory (https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/96209.html; Georg-August-Universität Göttingen).

## Significance

Improving education path: a public observatory-chair. High confidence on 1807. Modest-to-medium weight because the post organised decades of measurement, still not a school law. State science as crown office is colour, not minted here as a twin worsening Fact. Survey, telegraph, and magnetic hut have their own dates. Later tourists in a reconstructed wing are not this appointment.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## What is established and what is not

Established: in 1807 Gauss became Göttingen observatory director and professor. Not established: that he designed every interior, or that a 2008 renovation is this instrument. A showing of a different start year would change the row.

The attached driver is edu-[digital-learning-access](/drivers/edu-digital-learning-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. 1807 office is not a later museum of the reconstructed building. Mixed effects of Gauss becomes professor and director of the Göttingen Observatory are separate paths.

Shared responsibility is part of Gauss becomes professor and director of the Göttingen Observatory. Naming Carl Friedrich Gauss does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1807-07-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
