# BnF/Gallica make a 42-line Bible a French public and later digital object

Date: 1800

## The fact

The BnF holds Gutenberg Bible material and Gallica publishes related early-print digital objects. This Fact stores French public access, distinct from London and Washington copies.

## Context

The so-called Mazarin Bible tradition is a Paris library story.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

BnF and Gallica independently operate the French public holding and scans.

Official or archival record: Bibliothèque nationale de France (https://www.bnf.fr/en; Bibliothèque nationale de France).

## Significance

Access path. High confidence on a public French copy/scan culture.

A Paris shelf is not a Mainz sack. 1462 remains a war row.

## What is established and what is not

Established: BnF/Gallica public Gutenberg Bible access. Not established: that Mazarin printed it.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
