# Cambridge Digital Library publishes a public page-turning Gutenberg Bible

Date: 2015

## The fact

Cambridge Digital Library published a public digital Gutenberg Bible with page-level access.

## Context

Digital facsimiles can freeze one copy’s damage and can open the book. Both are true. BL exhibition is a different city.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

The CUDL viewer is the official digital object. Britannica independently frames the 42-line Bible as Gutenberg’s book.

Official or archival record: Cambridge Digital Library — Gutenberg Bible (https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/PR-INC-00001-A-00001-00001-03761/1; Cambridge University Library).

## Significance

Digital-access path. High confidence on the public viewer.

A viewer is not Helmasperger. The lawsuit is another URL.

## What is established and what is not

Established: CUDL public Gutenberg Bible scan. Not established: that pixels are the 1455 ink.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
