# Printed notices and later colonial paperwork use the press for distant extraction

Date: 1500

## The fact

From about 1500 printed European notices, privileges and reports served overseas extraction. This Fact stores that later use of the press, not a 1455 slave-ship Gutenberg captained — there is no such file here.

## Context

Indulgences already showed job-printing of filled forms. Empire reused the form. Medium confidence; still a required later harm path beside scientific reprint.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

The Met’s early-print essay and academic imperial-print synthesis independently describe printed overseas paperwork.

Official or archival record: Met Heilbrunn — The printed image in the West (https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/prnt/hd_prnt.htm; Metropolitan Museum of Art).

## Significance

Extraction-paper path. Medium confidence.

A privilege sheet is not a 42-line Bible.

## What is established and what is not

Established: sixteenth-century printed overseas notices as a genre. Not established: that Gutenberg designed a colonial code.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
