# Mainz-type shops print letters of indulgence as paid spiritual-rental sheets

Date: 1454

## The fact

In 1454–55 printed letters of indulgence appear from the Mainz typographic orbit, among the earliest dated European printed sheets. This Fact stores that job-printing of paid spiritual instruments, not the 42-line Bible.

## Context

Print made indulgences cheaper to issue at volume. That is a bureaucratic scale-up of a rent. Later Reformation print against indulgences is a different person’s row. Both use the same industrial form.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Gutenberg-Gesellschaft invention notes and Britannica independently treat 1450s indulgences as early dated printing.

Official or archival record: Gutenberg-Gesellschaft — Gutenberg’s invention and the Helmasperger instrument (https://www.gutenberg-gesellschaft.de/en/johannes-gutenberg/gutenbergs-invention; Gutenberg-Gesellschaft).

## Significance

Scaled-rent path. High confidence that printed indulgences exist in 1454–55.

A form is not a 42-line page. Do not rebate the Bible with a plenary letter.

## What is established and what is not

Established: printed indulgence letters from the mid-1450s Mainz typographic orbit. Not established: that Gutenberg personally preached a crusade, or a unique soul-count.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
