# Printed bulls, ordinances and later statute collections use the press for public legal text

Date: 1468

## The fact

By the end of Gutenberg’s life and immediately after, presses were already used for official sheets and would soon be used for ordinance-like public texts. This Fact stores that legal-copyability path, not the indulgence as a virtue.

## Context

The same shop can print a Bible, an indulgence, and a legal sheet. Split signs. [Democratic-resilience](/drivers/democratic-resilience) here is copyable public wording, not a parliament.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Gutenberg-Gesellschaft documentation of early job-printing and Britannica independently describe non-book printed sheets from the 1450s on.

Official or archival record: Gutenberg-Gesellschaft — Gutenberg’s invention and the Helmasperger instrument (https://www.gutenberg-gesellschaft.de/en/johannes-gutenberg/gutenbergs-invention; Gutenberg-Gesellschaft).

## Significance

Public-text path. Medium-high confidence on the technique; low on a unique Gutenberg statute book.

A bull can be rent extraction (indulgence row) or a public wording. Do not average them.

## What is established and what is not

Established: early presses printed official sheets as well as books. Not established: that Gutenberg democratised a diet.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
