# Printed medical books multiply regimens and herbals after the 1450s press demonstration

Date: 1470

## The fact

From the 1470s printed medical books and herbals multiplied regimens that had been expensive in manuscript. This Fact stores that health-knowledge access path as later print, not as a Gutenberg clinic.

## Context

Reprint can freeze error as easily as freeze a good recipe. Confidence stays medium on outcomes. The path is still a documented use of the press.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Internet Archive early medical prints and Britannica’s Gutenberg/print frame independently show medical incunabula as a press genre.

Official or archival record: Internet Archive — early printed books (https://archive.org/; Internet Archive).

## Significance

Health-knowledge path. Medium confidence on patient outcomes; high that medical titles were printed.

A herbal is not a field hospital. Keep the lag.

## What is established and what is not

Established: printed medical/herbal books in the incunabula decades. Not established: that Gutenberg authored a herbal, or a mortality series.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
