Date: 1480

## The fact

As presses multiplied after Mainz, paper-mill production had to scale, using water-power and rag supply.

## Context

The driver is analogical for a fifteenth-century mill. Confidence medium. Still a real input: no paper, no 42-line Bible at volume.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Print-history essays on paper supply and academic mill history independently link presses to paper demand.

Official or archival record: Met Heilbrunn — The printed image in the West (https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/prnt/hd_prnt.htm; Metropolitan Museum of Art).

## Significance

Resource-input path. Medium confidence.

A mill-wheel is not a Bible. Keep the book as access and the mill as input.

## What is established and what is not

Established: expanding print required expanding paper-mill output. Not established: a kWh series for 1480, or Gutenberg as a miller.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
