# Archbishop Adolf of Mainz grants Gutenberg a late maintenance in the city

Date: 1465

## The fact

In 1465 Archbishop Adolf of Mainz granted Gutenberg a maintenance (clothing, grain and the like in the public biographical record).

## Context

A pension is not a restoration of the Bible shop. It is still a documented end-of-life civic place in Mainz. Death follows in 1468 in the public record.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Mainz civic identity and Britannica independently date the 1465 maintenance and 1468 death.

Official or archival record: City of Mainz (https://www.mainz.de/; Stadt Mainz).

## Significance

Patronage path. High confidence on a late Mainz maintenance in the standard biography.

A coat and grain are not a reprint of the 42-line Bible.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1465 archiepiscopal maintenance; death 1468 in public biographies. Not established: a 1400 exact birthday, or that the pension paid pressmen’s back wages.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
