# Compositors and pressmen supply the 1450s shop labour that later portraits erase

Date: 1455

## The fact

The 1450s Mainz Bible shop depended on compositors and pressmen whose names the later inventor portrait usually drops. This Fact stores that labour as a welfare-relevant industrial cost, required by the user, not as a colour anecdote of ‘stubborn genius’.

## Context

A 42-line page is many hours of setting. Debt to Fust intensified the shop’s need to finish. Both the book and the backs are real.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Gutenberg-Museum workshop interpretation and the Met’s print-history essay independently describe printing as a multi-worker process.

Official or archival record: Gutenberg-Museum Mainz (https://www.gutenberg-museum.de/; Gutenberg-Museum Mainz).

## Significance

Labour path. High confidence that a workforce existed; names are mostly lost, which is part of the harm stored.

A nameless compositor is not a footnote. He is the mechanism.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1450s Bible production required unnamed press labour under a named principal. Not established: a wage series or a unique injury count in this catalog.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
