# Printed denunciations and name-lists make persons durable public targets

Date: 1524

## The fact

In the 1520s printed pamphlets routinely named living persons as targets of theological and civic enmity at a volume manuscript libels could not match. This Fact stores that later identity-harm use of the press.

## Context

The driver is analogical. Confidence medium. Still closer than pretending print never listed enemies. Do not call it GDPR.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Reformation pamphlet culture and academic press independently show printed personal denunciation as a genre.

Official or archival record: [Luther](/people/martin-luther) public documentation portal (https://www.luther.de/; Luther institutions / public Lutheran documentation).

## Significance

Named-target path. Medium confidence on driver fit; high that named pamphlets existed.

A named enemy sheet is not Helmasperger. The 1455 names are a lawsuit, not a pamphlet war.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1520s printed denunciations of named persons. Not established: a modern data-protection statute, or Gutenberg as the author of a 1524 libel.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
