# Reformation pamphlet wars use the press as a polarising multiplier

Date: 1520

## The fact

Around 1520 European pamphlet wars used movable-type print at a volume impossible in 1440 manuscript culture. This Fact stores that later polarising multiplier, as the user required, without making Gutenberg a Reformer or a Catholic polemicist.

## Context

Vernacular scripture as cohesion is a separate improving row. Same ecology, opposite sign. Do not average.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

[Luther](/people/martin-luther)-related public documentation and Britannica’s print biography independently connect movable type to Reformation publicity.

Official or archival record: Luther public documentation portal (https://www.luther.de/; Luther institutions / public Lutheran documentation).

## Significance

Polarisation path. High confidence that 1520s pamphlets used presses; Gutenberg’s share is inherited method.

A pamphlet is not a 42-line Bible. Keep 1455 as a book, 1520 as a war of sheets.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1520s religious pamphlet print at new volume. Not established: that Gutenberg wrote a 1520 treatise.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
