# Seventeenth-century religious-war print uses the press as a news-and-hatred instrument

Date: 1618

## The fact

From 1618 printed broadsheets and newsbooks carried religious-war propaganda at scale. This Fact stores that later use of the press Gutenberg demonstrated, not his presence in Prague.

## Context

A technique can print Vesalius and can print a massacre sheet. Split 1543 science from 1618 hatred. Confidence on Gutenberg’s personal responsibility is rightly low; the catalog still records the later path.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Academic war-and-print synthesis and the Met’s print-history essay independently describe early-modern printed propaganda.

Official or archival record: Cambridge University Press (https://www.cambridge.org/; Cambridge University Press).

## Significance

War-propaganda path. High confidence that war print existed; low on a unique Mainz coefficient.

A newsbook is not Helmasperger. Do not back-date 1618 into 1455 debt.

## What is established and what is not

Established: seventeenth-century religious-war print. Not established: that Gutenberg designed a 1618 newsbook.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
