# Vernacular scripture and pamphlets use the press Gutenberg demonstrated

Date: 1522

## The fact

In September 1522 a German New Testament was printed for lay reading, a vernacular explosion that required the press Gutenberg’s shop had demonstrated. This Fact stores that later cohesion-and-access use, not Gutenberg as a Reformer.

## Context

The same press ecology prints peasant-war pamphlets and anti-Jewish programmes on [Luther](/people/martin-luther)’s worsening rows. Here the instrument is vernacular copyability. Split signs across persons as well as rows.

[Johannes Gutenberg](/people/johannes-gutenberg) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Luther public documentation and Britannica’s Gutenberg biography independently connect movable type to later Reformation print without making Gutenberg a Wittenberg author.

Official or archival record: Luther public documentation portal (https://www.luther.de/; Luther institutions / public Lutheran documentation).

## Significance

Vernacular-corpus path. High confidence that 1522 used presses; Gutenberg’s share is method, not translation.

A German page is not a 42-line Latin page. Keep 1455.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1522 vernacular scripture in print using movable type. Not established: that Gutenberg translated the New Testament.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
