# Nova Methodus pro maximis et minimis is printed in the October 1684 Acta Eruditorum

## The fact

In October 1684 Acta Eruditorum printed Leibniz’s Nova Methodus pro maximis et minimis, the first public exposition of his differential calculus notation. It is not the later Commercium Epistolicum.

It is one event.

## Context

SEP’s calculus entry and the Akademie-Ausgabe independently treat October 1684 as the print date. Newton’s unpublished earlier work is a parallel, not an affiliation. Later textbooks using d/dx are reception, not 1684 autograph.

Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Nova Methodus appeared in October 1684. Not established: that 1684 erases Newton’s earlier manuscripts, or a unique later engineering series.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
