# Haftar launched Operation Dignity in eastern Libya

Retired general [Khalifa Haftar](/people/khalifa-haftar) launched the military campaign known as Operation Dignity in eastern Libya in May 2014. UN reporting described the operation as initially targeting Ansar al-Sharia but also striking other armed formations, helping turn political fragmentation into an organized armed confrontation.
