# Hegel works as a private tutor in Bern

Date: 1793

## The fact

From autumn 1793 to 1796 [Hegel](/people/georg-wilhelm-friedrich-hegel) earned as Hofmeister in Bern, tutoring children of the Steiger von Tschugg patrician household after leaving the Stift without an immediate Württemberg church living. It is not the later unpaid Jena Privatdozentat, stored as a worsening labour row, and not a Swiss public-school statute. He wrote theological drafts in off hours; the wage was lessons. The row stores livelihood. It does not twin every Bern fragment as a book.

## Context

German Magisters without a living often sold hours to patricians. That is labour: skill for cash in a private house, not a university. Do not merge with Frankfurt 1797, another tutorial post. Do not treat later collected ‘Early Theological Writings’ as 1793 public print — those drafts were not this wage. Bern’s aristocratic republic is background, not a claim that Hegel legislated there. An improving labour path can coexist with a later unpaid-lecturer harm; they are different dates. Patrician children in Bern received hours; Hegel received coin; the theological drafts in the drawer are not this wage and not a 1793 shop book.

The attached driver is [labour-market-tightness](/drivers/labour-market-tightness). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

## Evidence and sources

Tübingen’s institutional story explains why Stift graduates sought private posts. Britannica independently dates the Bern tutorship 1793–1796 after Tübingen. Official: https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/. Independent: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Georg-Wilhelm-Friedrich-Hegel. SEP corroborates as a finding aid. The records establish the Bern employment. They do not establish a unique later Swiss labour series. A Württemberg church living in 1793 would be the contradictory showing; the locators instead show a patrician household wage in Bern. A showing he held a Bern chair rather than a household post would change the row.

Official or archival record: University of Tübingen (https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/; Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen).

## Significance

Improving labour path: paid teaching hours. High confidence on the post. Modest weight. Unpaid Jena years are a different sign. Later Berlin salary is restoration colour on another row. Do not invent a unique tightness coefficient for one tutor.

Shared responsibility is part of Hegel works as a private tutor in Bern. Naming Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1793-10-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Hegel tutored in Bern 1793–1796 for wages. Not established: that the theological drafts were published then, or that Frankfurt is this post. A contradictory 1793 church living in Württemberg would change the row.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Bern tutoring is not the Frankfurt years and not a chair. Mixed effects of Hegel works as a private tutor in Bern are separate paths.
