# Hegel takes a tutorial post in Frankfurt am Main near Hölderlin

Date: 1797

## The fact

In 1797 [Hegel](/people/georg-wilhelm-friedrich-hegel) moved to Frankfurt am Main as tutor in the Gogel family, in the same city as Hölderlin, and spent 1797–1800 writing unpublished political and religious manuscripts while earning by lessons. It is not Bern, not the 1801 Jena Habilitation, and not a later edition of the so-called ‘German Constitution’ fragment. Hölderlin helped place him; the Gogels paid. The row stores one educational-labour hinge. Unpublished constitutional drafts are a neighbouring holdback path, not this wage.

## Context

Frankfurt was an imperial-city commercial world, not a university. A Stift graduate could read political economy and Kant beside a merchant table. Do not treat later print of the Verfassungsschrift as 1797 public teaching. Do not merge with Schelling’s Jena, which Hegel had not yet joined. Education here is continued self-schooling plus paid lessons, not a chair. Hölderlin’s placement help is friendship labour; the Gogels’ table is the cash; the Verfassungsschrift in the drawer is a holdback neighbour, not this tutorial.

## Evidence and sources

BnF authority pages identify Hegel’s biographical stations including the Frankfurt years in the documentary record of his works. SEP independently dates the 1797–1800 Frankfurt tutorship and the unpublished manuscripts of that period. Official: https://data.bnf.fr/en/11907200/georg_wilhelm_friedrich_hegel/. Independent: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hegel/. The records establish the Frankfurt post. They do not establish a unique later enrolment series. An itinerary that skipped Frankfurt for a Jena chair in 1797 would change the row; the locators do not show that skip. A showing he never left Bern until Jena would change the row.

Official or archival record: BnF data — Hegel (https://data.bnf.fr/en/11907200/georg_wilhelm_friedrich_hegel/; Bibliothèque nationale de France).

## Significance

Improving education path: continued study under a tutorial wage. High confidence on 1797–1800. Modest weight. Unpublished political drafts remain a data-holdback neighbour. Jena print is a later date. Do not back-date Phenomenology to a Frankfurt desk.

Shared responsibility is part of Hegel takes a tutorial post in Frankfurt am Main near Hölderlin. Naming Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1797-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Hegel tutored in Frankfurt 1797–1800. Not established: that the Verfassungsschrift was published then, or that 1801 Jena is this post. A contradictory itinerary skipping Frankfurt would change the row.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Frankfurt is not Bern and not Jena 1801. Mixed effects of Hegel takes a tutorial post in Frankfurt am Main near Hölderlin are separate paths.
