# Hegel takes the Heidelberg chair of philosophy

Date: 1816

## The fact

In 1816 [Hegel](/people/georg-wilhelm-friedrich-hegel) became ordinary professor of philosophy at Heidelberg, leaving the Nuremberg gymnasium for a university chair, and taught there until the 1818 Prussian call. It is not the 1817 Encyclopaedia as a book and not Berlin’s restoration chair, stored with a different welfare colour. Erlangen and Berlin also inquired; he chose Heidelberg first. The row stores one educational office. Two years only, still a real chair. The 1817 Encyclopaedia came from this desk; the book is stored separately. Altenstein’s later call is not this 1816 ordinary title.

## Context

Post-Napoleonic German universities re-hired talent. A gymnasium rector stepping into an ordinary chair is education-institution repair after 1806–16 school years. Do not merge with Berlin. Do not treat the Encyclopaedia’s 1817 print as this appointment. Do not treat Fries, who had been at Heidelberg, as this hiring — the Fries quarrel is a later Berlin preface. Student Jakob Friedrich Fries’s prior occupancy of related space is colour. Hegel’s Heidelberg estate-assembly essay is a neighbouring political print if stored, not this chair. A short chair is still a chair. Fries’s prior Heidelberg weather is not this hiring; Berlin’s 1818 restoration call is not this two-year ordinary professorship; the 1817 Encyclopaedia is a book, not the appointment letter.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## Evidence and sources

Heidelberg University’s public English portal locates the institution Hegel joined. Britannica independently dates the 1816–18 Heidelberg professorship. Official: https://www.uni-heidelberg.de/en. Independent: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Georg-Wilhelm-Friedrich-Hegel. SEP corroborates. The records establish the 1816 call. They do not establish a unique later chair-count series. A straight Nuremberg-to-Berlin jump skipping Heidelberg would change the row. A contradictory 1816 refusal would change the row.

## Significance

Improving education path: ordinary university teaching. High confidence on 1816. Modest weight. Berlin 1818 remains a restoration-coloured neighbour. Encyclopaedia 1817 remains a book. Do not invent a unique modern ranking coefficient.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Hegel was ordinary professor at Heidelberg from 1816 to 1818. Not established: that 1818 Berlin is this chair, or that the Encyclopaedia is this appointment. A skip from Nuremberg to Berlin would change the row. A showing he went straight from Nuremberg to Berlin would change the row.

The attached driver is edu-[digital-learning-access](/drivers/edu-digital-learning-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Heidelberg 1816 is not Berlin 1818. Mixed effects of Hegel takes the Heidelberg chair of philosophy are separate paths.

Shared responsibility is part of Hegel takes the Heidelberg chair of philosophy. Naming Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1816-10-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
