# The Phenomenology of Spirit is published in Bamberg

Date: 1807

## The fact

In April 1807, after a delayed printing through the Jena war, [Hegel](/people/georg-wilhelm-friedrich-hegel)’s Phänomenologie des Geistes appeared with Joseph Anton Goebhardt in Bamberg and Würzburg as a public book. It is not the 1812 Logic, not later English translations, and not [Marx](/people/karl-marx)’s posthumous use of dialectic. Hegel finished under bombardment weather; the printer manufactured sheets. The row stores one education-access print. Bamberg newspaper editorship is a neighbouring worsening job, not this colophon.

## Context

A book that walks a reader from sense-certainty to spirit is a syllabus in bound form. That is education even when the prose is hard. It is not a claim that 1807 created a mass literacy series. Do not treat later ‘Hegelian Marxism’ as 1807 — Marx is reception after Hegel’s death and is not a personal affiliation here. Do not treat Gutenberg reprints or a 21st-century seminar as this April. The 1806 flight that carried the manuscript is a displacement neighbour. Illegitimate son Ludwig, born February 1807 in Jena, is a humanitarian neighbour, not this title page. A Bamberg printer’s sheets are the public object; a Bamberg editor’s salary is a different job in the same town.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## Evidence and sources

Project Gutenberg’s public-domain Phenomenology locates the work as a printed object readers can still open. SEP independently dates the 1807 publication and treats the book as Hegel’s first major public system-piece. Official/public carrier: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17064. Independent: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hegel/. The records establish 1807 print. They do not establish a unique later citation coefficient as a welfare outcome. Marx is not a 1807 co-author; later English translators are not this April shop. A contradictory first-edition year would change the row.

Official or archival record: Hegel, Phenomenology of Mind — Project Gutenberg (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17064; Project Gutenberg).

## Significance

Improving education path: a copyable odyssey of consciousness. High confidence on 1807. Modest-to-medium weight because the book became a school, still not a ministry syllabus. Newspaper censorship and restoration right are other dates. Later translators are other authors. Do not nail a modern ideology index to this colophon.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Phenomenology of Spirit was published in 1807. Not established: that Marx co-signed it, or that Bamberg editorship is this book. A different first year would change the row; later translators would not. A showing of a different first year would change the row.

The attached driver is edu-[digital-learning-access](/drivers/edu-digital-learning-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Phenomenology print is not Marx and not the Bamberg editorship’s censorship colour. Mixed effects of The Phenomenology of Spirit is published in Bamberg are separate paths.

Shared responsibility is part of The Phenomenology of Spirit is published in Bamberg. Naming Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1807-04-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
