# Schelling breaks with Hegel after the Phenomenology’s preface

Date: 1807

## The fact

In 1807, once Phenomenology appeared, its preface’s treatment of identity-philosophy was read by Schelling as a break; the Tübingen-Jena alliance ended as a working partnership and became two camps. It is not the 1788 Stift, not 1801 Differenzschrift’s alliance, and not a later party. [Hegel](/people/georg-wilhelm-friedrich-hegel) published; Schelling answered by distance. The row stores polarization of a generation. It does not twin every later Schelling lecture against Hegel. The Stift is the 1788 origin; the 1801 Differenzschrift was still an alliance object. Hölderlin was already outside this academic fight.

## Context

German readers had to choose a system-brand. A preface that made identity-philosophy look cheap was a camp-making machine. Do not merge with 1827 Jahrbücher. Do not treat later Munich Schelling as 1807 Hegel’s act. Do not treat [Marx](/people/karl-marx) as this quarrel. Hölderlin was already outside the academic fight. Fichte was a printed ancestor, not this 1807 friend-break. Tübingen rooms remain an origin; 1827 Jahrbücher remain a later camp organ.

The attached driver is [political-polarization](/drivers/political-polarization). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

## Evidence and sources

The Gutenberg Phenomenology is the public preface-carrier. SEP independently narrates the 1807 break with Schelling over the Phenomenology’s stance. Official/public carrier: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17064. Independent: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hegel/. The records establish the split. They do not establish a unique later camp index. A 1808 co-authored system would change the row; the Stift is not this 1807 break. A 1807 Schelling letter of continued co-system would soften the row.

Official or archival record: Hegel, Phenomenology of Mind — Project Gutenberg (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17064; Project Gutenberg).

## Significance

Worsening polarization path: two famous names, two publics. High confidence on the break. Modest weight. Phenomenology’s syllabus remains an education neighbour. Stift years remain an education origin. Do not invent a unique modern polarization survey.

Shared responsibility is part of Schelling breaks with Hegel after the Phenomenology’s preface. Naming Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1807-11-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

## What is established and what is not

Established: in 1807 Schelling and Hegel ceased to be working allies after Phenomenology. Not established: a unique later party-coefficient, or that 1788 is this split. A continued 1808 co-authored system would change the row. A continued 1808 co-authored system would change the row.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Schelling split is not the 1788 Stift household and not Marx. Mixed effects of Schelling breaks with Hegel after the Phenomenology’s preface are separate paths.
