# Hegel withholds his manuscript on the German Constitution from print

Date: 1802

## The fact

Around 1799–1802 [Hegel](/people/georg-wilhelm-friedrich-hegel) wrote the so-called Verfassungsschrift on the German Constitution, a political manuscript he did not send to a shop; it became public only in later editorial hands. It is not the 1821 Right and not a diet act. He knew his argument; contemporary readers did not. The row stores a knowledge-access harm. It does not twin later scholarly editions as 1802 print. The 1821 Right is a later, different public book; Frankfurt tutoring is the desk, not a colophon.

## Context

A living political treatise kept in a drawer is delayed public data, even when later historians praise the draft. Do not treat 1821 as this manuscript. Do not treat the Holy Roman Empire’s 1806 end as Hegel’s doing. Frankfurt years supplied the desk. Jena would soon demand other prints. Medium confidence on exact terminal date; high confidence the text was not a 1802 shop book. Later scholarly editions are other authors; they do not convert a drawer into a contemporary public, and 1821 Right is a different book.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Unpublished Verfassungsschrift is not the 1821 Philosophy of Right. Mixed effects of Hegel withholds his manuscript on the German Constitution from print are separate paths.

## Evidence and sources

BnF data pages track Hegel’s published versus later-edited works as a bibliographic public. SEP’s social-political entry independently discusses the early unpublished constitutional manuscript. Official: https://data.bnf.fr/en/11907200/georg_wilhelm_friedrich_hegel/. Independent: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hegel-social-political/. The records establish an unpublished early political text. They do not establish a unique later open-science index. A 1802 shop edition would change the row; 1821 Right is a different public book. A 1802 first edition would change the row.

Official or archival record: BnF data — Hegel (https://data.bnf.fr/en/11907200/georg_wilhelm_friedrich_hegel/; Bibliothèque nationale de France).

## Significance

Worsening data-access path: withheld political argument. Medium-to-high confidence. Modest weight. Right 1821 is a later, different public book with its own sign. Frankfurt tutoring remains an education neighbour. Do not invent a unique modern FOIA coefficient.

The attached driver is [personal-data-protection](/drivers/personal-data-protection). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Hegel’s German-constitution manuscript of c. 1802 was not published in his lifetime. Not established: that 1821 is this draft, or a unique later data index. A 1802 imprint would change the row. A 1802 imprint would change the row.

Shared responsibility is part of Hegel withholds his manuscript on the German Constitution from print. Naming Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1802-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.
